I don't doubt the coming of the Singularity, but just because it seems looming doesn't mean it will happen. This is humanities first time possessing such technological prowess... who gets it right the first time out? Humanity is proven flawed as shown over and over throughout history.
I kind of expect that civilization will collapse utterly (2nd American Civil War, WW3, etc) Mad Max/Fist of the North Star style first, technology to be completely lost and the survivors will have to start the world over from, well maybe not step 1 but step 2 or 3 for sure.
Maybe after that the species will learn its lesson and be able to reach the Singularity without imploding.
On the other hand I'd love my netbook to be a dime sized subdermal implant. Also immortality.
